Sewn Products Manufacturing Base in Japan
Suffered A Great Damage By Big Earthquake

Great East Japan Earthquake of magnitude 9.0 occurred in the offing of the Pacific Ocean of East Japan on March 11. By the huge Tsunami which generated simultaneously, the area of the Pacific coast part of East Japan suffered widely destructive damage. Particularly, Miyagi Prefecture, Iwate Prefecture, and the seashore part of Fukushima Prefecture suffered serious damage over 500 km in full length. The dead and a missing person count 25,000 persons, and many missing persons' search is still performed.
The sewing factories where the Tohoku (Northeast) district in Japan supports Japan's apparel industry is gathered.
According to statistics of sewing industry, there are about 2,000 companies of the number of the sewing factories of this Tohoku (Northeast) district. And the number of employees engaged in those factories is presumed to be about 50,000 people.
By this big earthquake, these majorities of factory suffered damage and is obliged to closure or discontinuance of business. However, the real number is not grasped now.
As the reason, a massive earthquake and subsequent Tsunami attacked simultaneously and frequently in every place. Therefore, the stricken area was completely stopped with other areas from generating, and the lifeline had severed.
The hollowing out of Japanese sewing industry advanced, and it has already passed 20 years or more. The major sewing factory moved the sewing base to the countries of Asia as mainly China. Therefore, the sewing factory which remained in Japan has many minor sewing factories now, and they risk survival and are managing the clothing factory using the original technique.
However, the rise of the raw material and personnel expenses in China, and accompanying the shortage of labour, the situation of the sewing industry in China have changed suddenly from the second half last year.
